Alderbrook owner Anthony J. Terlato Honored with Wine Spectator's Distinguished Service Award
Influential Magazine Honors Wine Industry Pioneer With Its Most Prestigious Award Lake Bluff, IL July 6, 2004 -- Wine Spectator magazine today announced that Anthony J. Terlato, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Terlato Wine Group, is the recipient of its 2004 Distinguished Service Award. The award will be presented on Saturday, November 6th at a dinner honoring Terlato during the Wine Spectator's California Wine Experience, held in Chicago, Illinois.
Terlato was selected by the Wine Spectator in recognition of a remarkable 50-year career that began in his father's retail wine and spirits store in Chicago and has spanned virtually every segment of the wine industry, including wine distributing, importing, marketing, production and vineyard ownership. Today, Terlato oversees the Lake Bluff-based Terlato Wine Group, the parent company of Paterno Wines International, the leading marketer of luxury wines in the United States, as well as other Terlato family's businesses in the luxury wine industry.
"Given Tony Terlato's lifetime commitment to fine wine and his extensive efforts on behalf of a number of worthwhile charities, the award is richly deserved," said Marvin R. Shanken, Editor and Publisher of Wine Spectator.
The Distinguished Service Award, initiated in 1982, is presented periodically to an individual who has made significant contributions to the enhancement and appreciation of food and wine. Past winners have included Francis Ford Coppola (2003), Julia Child (1998), Robert Mondavi (1994), Angelo Gaja (1997), Piero Antinori (1999) and Ernest & Julio Gallo (1983).
"The Wine Spectator Distinguished Service Award is a very special honor for me, and one that I wish to share with my family," said Terlato. "Working with my father, I learned about quality, and for a half-century I have committed myself to focus entirely in the quality sector of the wine industry. My sons, who work with me, share my passion for quality, and have in turn passed this ideal down to their children. Together we accept this honor with great pride, and it will serve to encourage us to hold to the concept we have adopted, 'quality is a way of life, quality is enduring.'"
The Terlato Wine Group is the parent company of several independent businesses specializing in the marketing and production of exceptional wines. Owned and operated by the Terlato family, the Group's flagship company is Paterno Wines International, the leading marketer of luxury wines in the United States. With a global portfolio of 39 world-class wine brands, Paterno presently markets more than 1 out of 10 bottles of wine over $14 sold in America. The Group also includes the family's winery investments and partnerships in some of the world's most esteemed wine regions, including: Napa Valley; Sonoma County; Santa Barbara County; Victoria, Australia; and the Rhone Valley.
